The Challenge of Chance: A Multidisciplinary Approach from Science and the Humanities The Frontiers Collection English Edition

A main conclusion that can be drawn is that, in that certain events are simply uncaused and could have been otherwise, we still cannot be sure whether chance is a truly fundamental and irreducible phenomenon, even after all this time, or whether it is always simply a reflection of our ignorance. The individual chapters are bound together by a general introduction followed by an opening chapter that surveys 2500 years of linguistic, fortune, and scientific reflections on chance, coincidence, randomness, philosophical, luck and related concepts.

As such, this book challenges the reader to think about chance in a new way and to come to grips with this endlessly fascinating phenomenon. Other challenges that emerge from this book include a better understanding of the contextuality and perspectival character of chance including its scale-dependence, throughout history including contemporary science, and the curious fact that, chance has been used both as an explanation and as a hallmark of the absence of explanation.

This book presents a multidisciplinary perspective on chance, cognitive neuroscience, genetics, mathematical physics, statistics, economics, with contributions from distinguished researchers in the areas of biology, linguistics, general history, law, logic, theology and philosophy.

One Hundred Years of Chemical Warfare: Research, Deployment, Consequences English Edition

The symposium examined crucial facets of chemical warfare from the first research on and deployment of chemical weapons in WWI to the development and use of chemical warfare during the century hence. Carried by a long-awaited wind, 000 dead and 4, leaving behind at least 1, the chlorine cloud passed within a few minutes through the British and French trenches, 000 injured.

The focus was on scientific, legal, ethical, and political issues of chemical weapons research and deployment — including the issue of dual use — as well as the ongoing effort to control the possession of chemical weapons and to ultimately achieve their elimination. The volume consists of papers presented at the symposium and supplemented by additional articles that together cover key aspects of chemical warfare from 22 April 1915 until the summer of 2015.

This chemical attack, which amounted to the first use of a weapon of mass destruction, marks a turning point in world history. The preparation as well as the execution of the gas attack was orchestrated by Fritz Haber, the director of the Kaiser Wilhelm Institute for Physical Chemistry and Electrochemistry in Berlin-Dahlem.

This book is open access under a CC BY-NC 2. 5 license. On april 22, the german military released 150 tons of chlorine gas at Ypres, 1915, Belgium. During world war i, haber transformed his research institute into a center for the development of chemical weapons and of the means of protection against them.

Economic Complexity and Human Development: How Economic Diversification and Social Networks Affect Human Agency and Welfare Routledge Studies in Development Economics Book 110 English Edition

This implies the need to encourage innovation and economic diversification beyond production expansion, focusing on the promotion of human agency and social inclusion. This book provides such a modern perspective on development economics, emphasizing the role of social networks, economic diversity and entrepreneurship for social welfare.

. It also provides useful information about structural factors which need to be considered by practitioners when designing pro-poor growth policies. Within this process of structural transformation, social networks are crucial for accessing information and social support, but networks can also be a root cause of exclusion and inequality reproduction.

Furthermore, the coverage of the core concepts of innovation, networks and development economics, enriched with multiple examples, makes it a valuable resource for scholars and advanced students of modern development economics. This book combines the human development approach and innovation economics in order to explore the effects that structural economic change has on human development.

The author discusses how innovation, social networks, economic dynamics and human development are interlinked, and provides several practical examples of social and micro-entrepreneurship in contexts as diverse as Peruvian rural villages and Brazil’s urban areas. The interdisciplinary perspective put forward in this book illustrates theoretical and methodological methods of exploring the complexity of development in a practical and relevant way.

While economic diversification can provide valuable new social choices and capabilities, it also tends to lead to more complex decision processes and changes to the set of capabilities required by people to self-determine their future.

Non-Equilibrium Social Science and Policy: Introduction and Essays on New and Changing Paradigms in Socio-Economic Thinking Understanding Complex Systems English Edition

The domain-based chapters of this work illustrate how economic theory is the only branch of social sciences which still holds to its old paradigm of an equilibrium science - an assumption that has already been relaxed in all related fields of research in the light of recent advances in complex and dynamical systems theory and related data mining.

The other chapters give various takes on policy and decision making in this context. Written in nontechnical style throughout, scientists, this book will benefit all researchers, with a mix of tutorial and essay-like contributions, professionals and practitioners interested in learning about the 'thinking in complexity' to understand how socio-economic systems really work.

The overall aim of this book, an outcome of the european FP7 FET Open NESS project, is to contribute to the ongoing effort to put the quantitative social sciences on a proper footing for the 21st century. A key focus is economics, and its implications on policy making, where the still dominant traditional approach increasingly struggles to capture the economic realities we observe in the world today - with vested interests getting too often in the way of real advances.

Insights into behavioral economics and modern computing techniques have made possible both the integration of larger information sets and the exploration of disequilibrium behavior.
